Snow was then being collected and stored in the winter container to maintain it for months during the summer. It was not just Abraham who enjoyed the ice cream, but even Solomon, the king of Israel, could not stop eating it on hot summer days.
However, during the fall of the Roman Empire, the sweet treat had slowly lost its popularity. In Sicily, another cold dessert was coming to live. Sorbetes comes from an Arabic word, scherbet, which means sweet snow. Meanwhile, Turkish would call it chorbet, which means to sip. So, how is gelato made then? All you needed was sugar, fruit juices, and the most important ingredient - snow.
