How Long Does Ice Cream Last Under the Sun?

Under the hot summer heat, a reshing cup of ice cream can really hit the spot. Whether you're craving sweets or not, it is hard to resist that creamy and delicious taste to battle the hot sun. With all this heat and time spent outdoors, you may be asking yourself how long it takes before the ice cream melts on a hot sunny day. You'll be surprised to know that it takes a little bit longer than you think.

Eating ice cream at the shop

Ice cream is always best if eaten right after it is served to you during the summer season, especially if it's from the best gelato or ice cream shop in town. There is always a lot of supply for ice cream shops so you will not worry about it being sold out anytime soon.

If you are one of those peeople who worries that your ice cream or gelato will melt inside the shop when it's hot, forget about it. Most shops use bio plastic cups which conducts less heat than a metal container, so expect your ice cream to last you a longer time. Spoons for ice cream and personalized ice cream cups are also used when eating ice cream and gelato, making your experience funner.

Eating Ice Cream outdoors

Eating ice cream outside under the hot sun is another story. So, how long does ice cream last under the sun? If you would rather take your ice cream in a to-go case, it will most likely melt much faster than eating it inside of the shop since it will be exposed to the sun. If it is a windy day, then most likely the air around your ice cream container will be replaced with warm air and in this case, it will melt more quickly. Using high quality plastic ice cream cups is a good way to keep your ice cream cool. This technique is better than using a cone or a metal container since these usually attract more heat than plastic cups. Also if you want to enjoy a good serving of ice cream under the hot sun, it is best to consume it immediately so that it will not melt anytime soon.

Melting times of ice cream

Ice cream melts differently because there are certain factors that contribute to the melting time of ice cream. The shape of the ice cream can change the time that it melts depending on the ratio of area between the surface and the volume of the ice cream. Ice cream that sticks out of the container will most likely melt first than those in the lower surface area. Also, the ingredients matter when it comes to melting time. Every ingredient has a melting temperature or an amount of heat energy required for it to melt. For example, milk melts at around 31 degrees Fahrenheit while other main ingredients of ice cream such as sugar, cream and salt will change the melting temperature. That is why organic ice cream will usually last longer under the hot sun than those with artificial flavoring.
