Nutritional Facts Of Gelato And Ice Cream

Gelato is often mistaken as an Italian word for ice cream. Regardless of their differences and similarities, gelato and ice cream actually have a different nutritional value because of their composition. While gelato has more of a creamy and dense texture than ice cream, it is often low in calories, fat and sugar. But gelato may not always be a healthier choice than ice cream depending on the type and portion. Read more to learn more nutritional facts of gelato and ice cream.

1. definition

For a frozen dessert to be legally labeled as ice cream it requires at least 10% of milk fat. High end ice cream brands usually contain 14-17% of milk fat. Ice cream is then churned at high speed that incorporates air creating a smooth and fluffy texture. Generally, ice cream contains 50% more air after the churning process. On the other hand, gelato contains 3-8% of milk fat and 25-30 % of air.

2. nutritional value

A vanilla flavored gelato contains 90 calories, with 3 grams of fat and 10 grams of sugar. While a classic vanilla ice cream contains 125 calories, 7 grams of fat and 14 grams of sugar. Fats in frozen treats tend to coat your taste buds, preventing a complete experience of flavors inside your mouth. As for the gelato, with low fat content, your taste buds can experience intense flavors.

3. considerations

Due to the lower air content, gelato is denser than ice cream. This means that a scoop of gelato would weigh more than an ice cream that has the same size scoop. Meanwhile, as the nutritional comparison is based on ounces, there is a greater chance that you are consuming the same calories, sugar, and fat as ice cream. Any added fruit sauces and chocolates also adds up to the calories and sugar.

4. tips for healthy options

Finding which one is a more healthy option for you still depends on your own personal preferences. Concerned about fat content? Gelato is often lower in fat. Concerned about the calories and sugar? Request gelato without any added chocolate, toppings, and syrups. A number of companies are now offering reduced-fat ice cream which can also be an alternative.
